Piero Crespo es Licenciado en Ciencias Biológicas por la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (1986) y Doctor en Ciencias Biológicas por la Universidad de Cantabria (1991). Su tesis se centró en el papel de Apo E en la patogénesis de la Ateroesclerosis. Siempre interesado por la transducción de señales, en 1992 se unió como becario Fulbright, al grupo de Silvio Gutkind en los National Institutes of Health (Bethesda, MD). Durante su etapa en NIH, de 1992 a 1996, sus trabajos más significativos fueron: la dilucidación del papel de los dímeros beta-gamma en la activación de la ruta Ras-ERK por receptores acoplados a proteínas G y la identificación de Vav como factor de intercambio para las GTPasas Rho, ambos publicados en Nature. Volvió a España con un Contrato de Reincorporación a finales de 1996 y tras ganar la plaza de Científico Titular del CSIC en 1998, se estableció en el Instituto de Investigaciones Biomédicas de Madrid. En 2002 se trasladó a Santander, a la Unidad Asociada del IIB con la Universidad de Cantabria, embrión del IBBTEC, donde trabaja actualmente con el rango de Profesor de Investigación del CSIC, al que ascendió en 2008, y director del centro. Su trabajo se ha centrado fundamentalmente en el estudio de la regulación de la ruta Ras-ERK. En concreto, en cómo la sublocalización celular y la compartimentalización espacial de dichas señales, inciden en sus efectos bioquímicos y biológicos, tanto en contextos fisiológicos como patológicos, en particular en cáncer. Y en cómo tal regulación espacial puede explotarse en busca de nuevas terapias antitumorales. En este aspecto, ha identificado la dimerización de ERK como potencial diana antitumoral y posteriormente ha descubierto una molécula inhibidora de dicha dimerización con notables efectos antineoplásicos, trabajos publicados en Molecular Cell y Cancer Cell respectivamente. Es autor de tres patentes y de 110 publicaciones científicas, incluidos trabajos en: Nature, Science, Cancer Cell, Molecular Cell, Nature Cell Biology, Nature Communications, EMBO J., J Cell. Biol, entre 61 publicaciones como primer o principal autor. A lo largo de su carrera, ha sido financiado regularmente por proyectos estatales, además de por proyectos de la UE (FP6) y de fundaciones privadas europeas (AICR) y españolas (Fundación Botín, AECC). Su grupo está incluido en CIBERONC. Ha dirigido 18 tesis doctorales, dos con Premio Extraordinario de Doctorado de la Universidad de Cantabria, y ha sido galardonado con seis premios nacionales e internacionales. Es miembro de cinco comités editoriales, y actúa habitualmente como evaluador para instituciones científicas nacionales y extranjeras, y como revisor en múltiples revistas científicas. Ha sido invitado a impartir más de un centenar de charlas y seminarios en congresos, universidades y otras instituciones científicas, nacionales e internacionales y es Profesor Honorario de la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid y de la Universidad de Cantabria.
