Alfonso is Gradutated with Excellence in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology by Universidad del Pais Vasco (2017). During his Bachelor studies, he collaborated with Patricia Aspichueta's lab and Juan Iriberri's lab, where he performed his Bachelor Final Thesis.

He obtained an MSc in Evolutionary Genetics and Genomics from Universidad de Barcelona (2018). Under the supervision of Iñaki Ruiz-Trillo and Andrej Ondracka, in the Multi-Cell Genome Lab, he performed his Master Thesis on the genomic changes that led to the appearance of the multicellularity in animals.

In March 2019, he joined the Intergenomics group in the IBBTEC. Under the supervision of Fernando de la Cruz and Raúl Fernández he embarked on the adventure of characterizing an experimentally evolved strain of Synechococcus elongatusPCC7942, with the purpose of obtaining a fast-growing platform of high-value biotechnological compounds, and hopefully, write this PhD thesis.
