Graduated in Geological Sciences from the University of Salamanca and PhD from the University of Oviedo (2001). Assistant Professor 2001-08. Since 2008, Professor (PTU) in Geomorphology in the Department of Earth Sciences and Condensed Matter Physics, Faculty of Sciences, University of Cantabria. Research and teaching stays, predoctoral and postdoctoral, at the Universities of Milano-Bicocca, Ferrara and Modena e Reggio Emilia (Italy), at the International Institute for Aerospace Research and Earth Sciences in Enschede (The Netherlands), the Geological Survey of Canada, Ottawa (Canada), at the Universities of La Plata and Jujuy (Argentina), San Carlos and Florianópolis (Brazil) and Colima (Mexico).
Since October 2001 I have taught in more than 20 undergraduate and graduate subjects. I have also taught more than 20 university courses, conferences and seminars. I have supervised 5 doctoral, 6 final master's theses and 19 final degree theses, two of them abroad.
I have participated in 8 international projects (2 principal investigator) and 14 national ones (3 principal researcher). I have also collaborated in more than a dozen R&D contracts with companies and administrations. After graduating and before starting my doctorate, I worked as a geologist for three years for the companies Desarrollo de Recursos Geológicos S.A. and E. N. ADARO S.A.
I have produced over 170 scientific contributions, most of them published in international journals and volumes. I have also participated in more than sixty international and national congresses and meetings. I have been coeditor of the journal Quaternario y Geomorfología and a regular reviewer (and guest editor) for some of the most prestigious journals in my field of research. I have been an organizer of seminars and congresses, and other R&D activities, and a member of the scientific committee and session chairman at various national and international congresses.
I am a member of the Geological Society of Spain and of the Spanish Geomorphology Society and of the international DENUCHANGE working Group of the IAG. Regular reviewer of national and foreign research projects and programs and scholarships. Coordinator of the Doctorate Program of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Cantabria 2017-21; Deputy director and director of the Department of Earth Sciences and Condensed Matter Physics, 2012-23.
Research topics include the analysis of spatial data through Geographic Information Systems and remote sensing techniques; the sustainable management of resources and geomorphological risks (EIA, environmental planning and geological heritage); the global change and the Anthropocene; the relationships between human activities and the climate and surface geomorphological processes; the assessment and mapping of natural processes and associated risks; geomorphology, especially hillside processes, subsidence and erosive processes.
