 Detalle Proyecto

eMetCO2 (PCI2024-2): eNETmix technology for electrocatalytic production of Methanol from captured CO2. Proyecto PCI2024-155025-2 financiado por MICIU/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 / UE

There is an urgent need to mitigate carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration in the atmosphere, which is dramatic increasing and causing global warming and climate change. Low-temperature electrochemical CO2 reduction (eCO2R) represents a sustainable alternative to use carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) to decrease these greenhouse emissions and provide high value-added chemicals and fuels, like methanol. Given it can be powered by renewable energy sources and involving relatively mild reaction conditions (in comparison to the conventional fossil fuel-based processes at industrial scale). Yet, eCO2R technology remains at low technology readiness level (TRL) and needs further improvements regarding advanced electrocatalysts and process design, to develop a high-performance CO2 electrolyzer towards methanol production. Hence, the eMetCO2 project brings together an international team of experts, who is able of enhancing masstransfer and lowering the reaction energy needs by employing a novel and disruptive electrochemical cell concept -eNETmix, - which will provide validation of an advanced energy-efficient eNETmix based CO2 electrolyzer into methanol at lab-scale, but in conditions relevant to a subsequent industrial application (TRL = 5). Thus, paving the way for improving the global awareness of the impact that this innovative technology can in a clean, sustainable and secure energy transition for all.
