Abstract: This paper aims to assess the efficiency of Irish and North Atlantic Spanish ports in generating traffic and examine changes in efficiency over the period 2000-15. Specifically, technical efficiency scores are derived by using stochastic frontier analysis. Subsequently, cluster analysis is employed to develop a robust typology of ports for efficiency benchmarking. This paper has identified two clusters of ports with the estimated average technical efficiency of cluster 1 ports being much higher than the efficiency of cluster 2 ports. Differences in efficiency and main characteristics of clusters have persisted during the period 2000-15.
