Heat conditions and time curing influencing on alkaline activated illite clay-coal fly ash bricks

Abstract: The alkaline-activated reaction is carried out at low temperatures with coal fly ashes as main raw material. Due to the use of low temperatures (less materials and energy consumption and less emissions) and utilization of waste (coal fly ash), main premises of the circular economy, the geopolymeric processes could be a good technology in ceramic processes. This paper presents the role of the influence of curing temperature and time on the strength development and water absorption in a geopolymer that illite clay is used as fine aggregates and coal fly ash (FA), FA is used as a pozzolanic material. In previous work, the main factors of alkaline-activated illite clay-coal fly ash were studied. The optimum mixture for the clay/FA geopolymer is Na2SiO3/NaOH ratio of 0.4, FA/Clay ratio of 0.7 and NaOH concentration of 6M. Now in this paper, the optimum mixture was selected to be studied a different heat conditions (75-450ºC) and time curing (7-28 days). Flexural strength and water absorption not exhibit best results increasing the heat conditions and days of curing, therefore, hydraulic reactions has more relevance than the sinterization reactions due to at the low temperatures used in these alkaline activation bricks.
