Abstract: This article analyses the transition to adulthood of young people in rural areas of central Mexico, particularly their trajectories from school to the work market. The analysis focuses on the dialogical relationship between work and consumption, namely how consumption acts as a motivator to find a job and how the income derived from employment shapes consumption patterns. Set in a historically precarious social context, the aim of this study is to identify the decision-making practices and discourses in the transition of rural young people from school to paid employment, and to interpret their various trajectories as indicators of social inequality. Research was carried out between 2015 and 2022 based on a social-sciences methodology that combines ethnographic techniques with the construction of a case-study. The trajectories analysed evidence the intertwining of unfavourable work conditions (minimal regulation of work at different stages) with a limited, fragmentary and tense consumption decision-making between the intensely desired and the scarcely possible.
