Book review: The International Monetary Fund: distinguishing reality from rhetoric. By Graham Bird and Dane Rowlands .

Abstract: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has attracted much scholarship since its creation in 1944; however, a common understanding of its activities is still missing. To clarify empirical evidence and distinguish it from rhetoric, this book offers an extensive discussion of the state of the art on the fund. Graham Bird and Dane Rowlands are primarily concerned with offering an objective analysis that avoids generalizations ?unsupported by the empirical evidence? (p. vii). The very complexity of the IMF's work, they argue, complicates the task of reaching sound scientific conclusions as to its performance. Bird and Rowlands bring together a carefully compiled study which includes papers they published previously in academic journals, as well as new research.
