Food waste and food loss definitions: uses, similarities and differences

Abstract: A paramount decision that must be taken during food waste (FW) quantification is the determination of its definition. Currently, there is no set definition of FW. Therefore, the aim of this study is to collect through a literature review and analyse FW definitions used in the literature. 13 definitions have been collected and analysed. Not all the authors consider the waste derivative from food as FW, some of them classify this waste into FW and Food Loss (FL). Generally, this difference is established depending the Food Supply Chain stage in which the waste has been produced. In addition, FW definitions differ in whether edible and inedible parts are FW, if FW can only come from human consumption and where FW is generated.
