An unknown "classic cave": Re-evaluation of El Salitre (Ajanedo, Cantabria, Spain) rock art with 3D digital recording methodologies

Abstract: El Salitre Cave is a classic rock art site in Cantabrian Spain, discovered by L. Sierra in 1903. Except for specific studies focused on particular graphic evidence recording, no research has undertaken an integral study of its rock art ensemble. This paper reports the results of the cave re-study in which 3D digital recording methodologies were applied. The ensemble of dotted depictions typical of Cantabrian Spain has been enlarged through the identification of new graphic evidence. Furthermore, a new chronological proposal is presented for the black figures located at the end of the cave. In short, the revision of classic rock art sites is necessary to obtain a better understanding of the Palaeolithic graphic phenomenon.
