Comparative life cycle assessment of the incorporation of electric arc furnace dust into ceramic products

Abstract: A comparative life cycle assessment shows that the environmental impact of bricks incorporating Electric Arc Furnace Dust (EAFD) is lower than the impact of conventional fired bricks in each of the impact categories studied. Reduction on the amounts of landfill wastes, natural resources extracted and the avoidance of energy consumption for sintering clay have been obtained. Not substantial impact differences appear between the two end of life scenarios proposed with different recycling and landfilling proportions. Eco-Indicator 99 method under SimaPro 8 have been used. Laboratory leaching test data were applied to estimate the release of toxic metals into the environment from demolished bricks. Results can contribute to apply this innovation at industrial scale.
