Iso-emission map: A proposal to compare the environmental friendliness of short sea shipping vs road transport

Abstract: Policymakersaroundtheworldarepromotingdifferentinitiativestofacethethreatofglobalwarming.Thisworkfocusesonthetransportsector.Inparticular,itfocusesonthoseinitiativesthatpromotetheshift of traffic from road to sea by supporting short sea shipping services in order to reduce airemissions.Theaimistocontributetothedebateaboutthedesirabilityofthismodalrebalancefromanenvironmental point of view. To this end, the so-callediso-emission mapis proposed. This new toolallows to identify the geographical scope where each transport alternative is more environmentallyfriendly. It is focused on physical emissions, therefore it provides an additional and complementarypointofviewaboutthesuitabilityofanymodalshift.Toillustratetheproposalmade,theiso-emissionmapis introduced through a case study: The motorway of the sea Gijón-St. Nazaire
