Regulation, competition, crisis and technical efficiency of companies operating in Spanish ports (2002-2011)

Abstract: This article analyses regulation, competition, crisis and technical efficiency of companies operating in Spanish ports in the following sectors: shipping agents, stevedoring, logistics and storage, towage, ancillary services for inspection, repair and maintenance of ships and goods and port terminals, over the period 2002–2011. The results show that port regulation during this period promoted greater efficiency among all port sectors. Furthermore, the work shows that competition and efficiency are highly scattered throughout the various port sectors, with some sectors showing very low technical efficiency, like stevedoring, operating alongside others with very high technical efficiency, such as services (inspection, repair and maintenance of ships and goods) and logistics operators. The work analyses the effects of the liberalisation introduced by Act 48/2003 of 26 November.
