Multi-objective optimization of coal-fired electricity production with CO2 capture

Abstract: The use of oxy-combustion for CO2 capture is an attractive alternative to amine based absorption of CO2 in coal-fired power plants. The aim of this work is to compare these two technologies taking into account environmental and economic criteria. The problem is mathematically expressed as a bi-criteria MINLP model. Results show that carbon capture with MEA performs better for soft environmental limits while oxy-fuel combustion shows better performance when more stringent environmental objectives are considered.
