Alfredo Ortiz Fernández received his PhD in 2005 on Electrical Engineering. Since 2019, he is Professor at the area of Electrical and Energy Engineering at the University of Cantabria, and he has three recognized Spanish Research Periods. His research focused on the analysis of the quality of electrical energy, electromagnetic and thermal studies of electrical machines, optimization of energy systems in buildings and energy characterization of forest biomass. On these topics, he has supervised 8 doctoral theses, published 127 publications, and 5 book chapters obtaining according to Scopus 1448 total bibliographical citations and an h-index of 22.
He has participated in 10 (PI in 5) research national projects (National Research Plan in Industrial Design and Production) and in one European research project. He has also participated or led several projects contracted by important private companies such as Repsol, Iberdrola, Eon, Gas Natural, Nissan or Robert Bosch. Moreover, he is also Associate Editor of Electrical Engineering-Archiv für Elektrotechnik and he is an active member of national and international working groups in the area of power transformers, such as the Spanish Association for Standardization (UNE), the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), the European Commission for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) and in CIGRE on the topic of natural and synthetic esters - evaluation of the performance under fire and the impact on environment.
